“I’M LOOKING for Sergeant Werther.” Phillip tapped his fingers against the counter. He wanted to growl as the woman barely even glanced up at him.

“And your name is?”

“I’m Phillip Jorgensen, and this is my brother Robert.” Phillip motioned one hand toward Robert.

“Hold on just a minute, Mr. Jorgensen, and I’ll see if he’s available.” The woman pushed her chair back and stood. She headed deeper into the precinct and stopped at the door to an office. A few minutes later she was on her way back, another officer close behind her.

“Mr. Jorgensen, I’m Sergeant Werther.” The officer came around the counter and held out his hand. “I hope you had a safe trip.”

“We did. I’m Phillip, and this is my brother Robert.” Phillip shook the offered hand and tried to curb his impatience.

“I looked over the papers you sent, and everything you’ve told me has checked out. We picked up Mr. Morgan, and he’s being held and charged.”

“Listen Sergeant, not to seem rude, but I just drove eight hours. Right now, my first and only priority is my kids.” His nerves were close to breaking, and he wanted to get to Jacob and Samantha.

“Completely understandable, Mr. Jorgensen. Before you leave, though, I did want to let you know that I will need to speak to both children as soon as possible—tomorrow, preferably. We have a few questions we need to ask them, with you present, of course.”

“I suspected as much.” Phillip clenched his jaw so hard it ached. “Now, where are my kids?”

Phillip listened closely as Sergeant Werther explained how to get to Child Protective Services. As soon as he quit speaking, Phillip thanked him and hurried out, Robert right behind him. It only took a few minutes and they were pulling up in front of the building.

“You ready for this?” Robert twisted in his seat and looked at Phillip.

Phillip nodded. His throat was too tight to actually let him speak. He opened the car door and climbed out. They made their way into the building and were promptly met by a short, gray-haired woman.

“Can I help you, sirs?”

Phillip cleared his throat.

“I’m looking for Cathy Wilkens.” Phillip’s hands started to shake, and he shoved them in his pockets.

“Give me just one moment, and I’ll get her for you.” The woman smiled. “May I tell her who is here to see her?”

“Phillip and Robert Jorgensen.” Robert answered for him, and Phillip shot him a grateful look.

“Just one moment, gentlemen.” The woman walked to a desk and picked up the phone. Less than a minute later, a woman who looked closer to their own age came through a door down the hall and started toward them. She stopped in front of them and glanced from one to the other.

“Mr. & Mr. Jorgensen, I’m Cathy Wilkens.”

“Ms. Wilkens.” Phillip pulled one hand free of his pocket and held it out. “I’m Phillip, and this is my brother Robert.” He shook her hand and waited until Robert had done the same. “Where are my children?”

“I’d
